Variation of Zigzag bar

This macrame pattern  is one of a most decorative knot seen in waxed cord macrame, you can adapt many variation in this pattern, and it can be very useful when you need to bend the pattern such as a line of necklace that fit your neck , or a pattern which fit the circle of stone.

Be sure you practice  Double Half Hitches Bar before you get started.

This  is one of the very useful and beautiful macrame pattern you must practice.
I found this style from my friend in Thailand, Waranya, she is an expert macrame making lived in Pai. She also sell her beautiful works at her shop 'Ma cafe' at Pai, 'Payaka' Guest house in Chiangmai and on her   Facebook . Just check it out.

Instructions :

  • Follow step 1-4 (first Double half hitch bar- to the right)
  • After that make 3 Squre knot As a step A-C
  • Then Follow Step 5-8  (Second Double half hitch bar- to the left)

Double Half Hitch Bar

This is one of a most decorative knot seen in waxed cord macrame, you must practice and know how to tie it perfectly.
Be sure you practice  Double Half Hitches before you get started.

We sometimes call the holding cord in this knot  a 'raised bar' which can be construct  in any direction, such as Horizontal, Diagonal or many shapes shown below.

  • the working cords should be vertical
  • The holding cord should be on the left of working cord , place it diagonal or horizontal depend on your prefer shape

Step 1: Tie one Double Half Hitches by
1.1 Take the first working cord on the left under the holding cord,
1.2 Then take it up  on the right over the holding cord,
and bring it under the working cord.
1.3 Pull it tight before make to next knot, just pull the end slightly to the left.

1.4 repeat step 1.1-1.3  but pull the end to the right.

Step 2: Tie another Double Half Hitches by take the second working cord on the right.

Step 3: Tie another Double Half Hitches by take the third working cord.
Step 4: Tie another Double Half Hitches by take the fourth working cord.

This is one bar(first row)  of double half hitch bar.  You can continue the next bar on the same direction(holding cord to the right) or opposite direction(holding cord to the left),

You can fill the triangle pattern inside The ZigZag bar, I called this Zigzag bar with fillers, which can create many different patterns design by yourself

Verticle Half Hitch

The Vertical Half Hitch is created differently than the other variations of the Double Half Hitch. Two Half Hitches are tied, and arranged with one above the other rather than side-by-side
The knots are tied with one working cord, attached to several holding cords. With the regular Double Half Hitch, it's the opposite: there are several working cords and usually one holding cord.
So it means you can add more color to your projects
Before stating the variation of vertical haft hitch you must learn this 2 basic knots.

Vertical Half Hitch (working cord to the right)

Instructions
Step 1 :  bring the end of working cord under the holding cord, and put it up over the holding cord ,bring it under the working cord.(reverse clockwise)
Tighten the knot firmly by pulling the end slightly to the right. This is one half hitch knot.
Step 2 : Make the second Half Hitch the same way (but clockwise), passing the working end over the holding cord, under it, and over the working cord.
Tighten the knot by pulling the end to the left.

Vertical Half Hitch (working cord to the left)

Vertical Half Hitch (4 holding cords)
Instructions

Secure 4 or more cords vertically for holding cord
Take one working cord on the left of the holding cord.
When tying Half Hitches of any type, you usually start by passing the working cord under the holding cord. Then you tie the Half Hitch.

Step 1 : Make the first vertical half hitch, the working cord will be on the left first, then after the vertical half hitch knot the working cord will be on the right of first holding cord.
be sure you Tighten every knots firmly.

Step 2: Make the second vertical Half Hitch the same way, Use the same holding cord tying with the second holding cord.

Step 3: Make the second vertical Half Hitch the same way, Use the same holding cord tying with the third holding cord.
Step 2: Make the second vertical Half Hitch the same way, Use the same holding cord tying with the fourth holding cord.
To continue the reverse direction in the second row, use the vertical half hitch to the left knot.

Macrame wrapping : Edge Covering

This is the macrame wrapping technic that cover the edge of things you wrap.
After you finish the wrapping, you can make the end to be pendant or necklace ( you need how long you want to make BEFORE you get started)

The knot in this wrapping is called Larks head and square knot.

You can use any material that suit your design, hemp, cotton and waxed cord is a good choice too.

Materials:

  • 2 working cords : measure the parameter of the things you wanna wrap, it should be more than 13 times of the parameter.
  • 2 holding cords: should be longer enough for your purpose, if you wanna make it a pendant it should be around in this picture, or you can leave more longer for making necklace.
  • 3 filler cords: the number of filler cords are depend on the thick of your things.

Instructions :

Arrange the 3 filler cords (white) and 2 working cords (brown) vertically,  and secure the top of holding cord by sticking the tape on your project board, or hang it with your  feet finger.

Step 1

Start the first square knot  by
  • Use the left working cord and curve it over both filler cords, heading right.
  • Direct the right working cord over the left. Pass it under the two filler cords and out through the space on the left.
  • Tighten the first half of the knot.
  • Take the working cord that's now on the right and curve it over the fillers, heading left.
  • Take the left working cord and pass it over the right one, under the fillers, and out through the space on the right. Tighten the Square Knot by pulling on the ends.

Step 2

  •  Repeat one more square knot.

Step 3

  • Arrange 2 holding cords (grey) on left and right side.
  • Start The first the Vertical Larks Head on the left side by  Folding the working cord and place it under the holding cord. Bring both ends over the holding cords, heading downward.Pass them under the folded area, pulling them firmly.

Step 4

  • Use the right working cord to make a Larks Head knot onto the right holding cord.
  • The first half is tied over - under - over. the second tie is  under - over - under.
  • Cross the working cords again, right over left.

Step 5

  • Repeat the pattern (step1-4)

Step 6

  • After you tie a few more knots, check to see that the knots are the appropriate width for the stone or coin.the entire knot should be a little bit smaller to hold the stone firmly.
  • The ends will be tied together at the top of the stone, so make sure the knotted design is balanced before you move on to the next step.

Step 7

  • Locate the ends of one HOLDING cord. Tie the ends together with a Square Knot (no fillers). Make sure you pull them firmly.

  • Flip the  stone over, and repeat this process with the ends of the second holding cord.

Once the Pendant  is completed, the ends are used to make the hole for pendant or necklace itself. See more here how to make an easy hole for pendant.
